Tired of trends
Throughout my career, I have rarely met a respected designer or editor who would call their work/ use the word „trendy“. Everyone with a shred of genius and quality avoids this word like the plague. Times are maybe shifting now, but still it reamains a trend (pun intended).
However, these designers do not avoid its meaning. Instead, they discuss „tendencies“, the „future“, and the „stream“ of things to come. Their motto about trends is „set it, don’t follow it“. Yet despite our desire to create the “new”, to set trends, it feels like we are living in a world that has seen everything. As Hemmingway once famously said, “there is nothing new under the sun.” The trends from today are the ones from the past; everything is repeating itself over time.
Trends are resurrected longings. We, as a human race, at some point, are getting tired of seeing the same things all over again.
Designers act as doctors, and order us a „switch“ to another medicine: just as if our body is exposed to the same antibiotic, where after a while it won’t work on our system anymore. The old trends bore us.
Today the Togo sofa (Ligne Roset) – slouchy and cosy – is resurrected from the 1970’s. Tomorrow, it will be the DS-2011 (de Sede) – elegantly sitting straight – a blast from the 1980’s. We go from low waisted jeans to high waisted, from slim to baggy, and from fitted to oversized. From 80s to 00s, 70s to 2022s…
Going with vintage and classics is the best way to go – hold on to those, because they are becoming trends all over again, now that they have had their beauty sleep. More often than not, these vintage designs employ higher quality materials and workmanship. Opt for good materials that will last throughout time. No matter the brand you chose – quality is key. It is all coming back someday soon.
